Thank you to everyone for making it out to the second night of our residency last evening. It was a bit darker, a bit smokier and a tad bit more serious and we thank you all for your attendance. We have had a wonderful couple of weeks and to be honest, we are only getting started. Three more Mondays this month with plenty of surprises to come.

Many thanks to The Young, Twilight Sleep and our good friends Holy Water Buffalo who made the long trip out from Utah to play a great midnight set.

First One

It was an absolute pleasure to begin our residency last night at The Satellite. We frequent this venue for many reasons, often for debauchery but most often because we love to watch and support our friends play at one of the most welcoming venues in town. Standing on stage with my best friends playing these new songs was such a breath of fresh air. I can not wait to begin really pushing this record and touring. I know it is totally uncool to be this personal and revealing on a band blog, but this is a big deal for me and although my head was (and still is) full of snot and pumped full of fever-reducers and an unhealthy amount of antihistamines...last night was crystal clear.

Toy Bombs, you always make me move up and down and that energy you bring for 40 minutes every show is astonishing, as always, thank you for joining us. Brendan Hines-you were a treat. Finishing the evening with Cassorla was totally completely rad and seeing Ethan from The Belle Brigade was great too.

A week ago we did not even know who would be playing on this bill...turned into such a wonderful evening- I look forward to the next 4 weeks and if anyone is still reading this, bring a friend and we shall, as my wrist still reads..."PARTY!" Thank You!

Hey Blog,

I know I neglect you quite frequently, but I have reasonable excuses...really, I promise. I mean I have been making a record and pulling my hair out trying to make it sound as good as possible with microphones and recording space that most record producers would go insane over. And now...it is done, and now, it is getting mixed...and now I can finally start doing the fun things that being in a band is all about-like writing blog posts, because this record sounds really fucking great and we are really proud of it. Unfortunately, working hard in this case does not just make a bunch of money show up and unfortunately, releasing a record takes a significant amount of money.

We have launched a Kickstarter, which is a platform where fans can help artists out financially and get really cool prizes in return.

If anyone is reading this here thing, we would really appreciate you checking out our page and letting some rich friends know too. At the very least you get to watch a bunch of pretentious puppets talk about record making-so that is cool.

We are incredibly excited about this record and we really want to reach our goal so we can have a proper self-release of this record. Thank you for reading. Hope to see you soon!

KXLU Guest DJ/The Bootleg Theater Tonight

We will be hanging out on 88.9 KXLU Los Angeles at Noon today with host Jen. We will be playing some music that we have been listening to lately as well as playing a demo or two of songs that we are working on. You can tune in on your dial or STREAM KXLU HERE. Should be fun.

Very excited for the show at The Bootleg Theater tonight as well. The show starts at 8...and we are so excited to be playing with all of these bands. We had a late one last night with Priory in San Diego and we can't wait for round two this evening. In case you need some GPS assistance the venue is located at 2220 Beverly Boulevard. The decision between sending Jared to the top bunk or the cage was one I did not want to make but in the wake of my axeity and exhaustion I opted for offering my fury friend the cage. A look of shame quickly took over Jare's face. I instantly regretted my decision but attempted to save the situation by explaining that the bunk bed was not safe for either of us as it was ridden with termites. I jumped first into the cage and looked at him expectingly. "This is where I usually sleep too" I announced. Jared quickly hopped in and the awkwardness began...

Jare Bear

After a long night of fighting, arguing, discussing, reminiscing, 'Sorry' playing, story telling and drinking, Jared and I were exhausted. Being that Jare was on a pilgrimage of sorts, I thought it was my duty to let him stay the night. Drew happily agreed. At this point Jared was too inebriated to walk. As seen in the picture I hoisted Jare on my shoulder and began carrying him to the guest room (Luckily Jared is made of mostly polyester and synthetic fibres as I am not strong enough to carry a real live bear). My anxiety rose as I began contemplating whether I should take him to Drew's over sized dog cage or the bunk bed. I didn't want to offend the bear but I also didn't want to sleep underneath a bear in a bunk as I prefer the bottom. I have a fear of heights.

Do to being enveloped in this *gnarley tour I have been unable to post another link in the chain of my Majestic tale.

Although Jared and I had reconciled our differences, there was thick competitive tension in there air. We decided to settle it by a light hearted game of 'Sorry'. I was surprised by the wit of the Bear. I guess the advantage of not being domesticated is the strategy you gain in the wild. Jared had all four of his pieces in before I even had two around the board! I knew this was the beginning of something great.

Jare Bear

As you can probably tell per our embrace, I survived the brawl. Turns out Bears are people just like me and you. We had an experience similar to that of Aiden and Big from Sex and The City, when they fought in upstate New York, then became friends. The intensity of the battle formed a bond between us and we became fast friends. We threw societie's opinions to the wind, we broke the norm, we shattered the barriers. Then we got to reminiscing.

Jared is a south american brown bear. He is not really indigenous to Lake Arrowhead, but rather Nevada, near Las Vegas. He is 7 years old (29 in Bear years) and has two boys, Henry and Jasper. His wife left him for a Grizzly 6 months ago and he couldn't support his sons on his own. He left them with his sister Claire and went off in search of work. Proceeding his intrusion on our household Jared had been trying to rob some local Arrowheadeons for some cash. Being a bear there is a certain stipulated toughness that goes with the territory. Jared is in fact a kind hearted and sensitive bear. After being shrugged off by inebriated bar go-ers he decided to embark on harassing what appeared to be the bottom of the human food chain, us. I think what he really wanted was a friend and he certainly found one in me.

Seen in this above picture is Jared apologizing for being so abrasive and me employing empathy.

I am going to be taking over the telling of the Jared story as Matt wasn't even there. I am tired of dictating to a scribe. This will be my first blog post ever.

Just before this picture was taken Jared and I had some words about his behavior. It being my pet peeve when someone you don't know grabs your personal possessions, I grabbed the guitar from him in an attempt to defend Drews honor. He then proceeded to attack me with the knife on the table. I had never been in a fight before so he had the advantage, being a Bear. Luckily I had Drew and Nick cheering me on and berating Jare for his lack of thumbs, which made it challenging for him to firmly grip the knife, and for being de-clawed.

Jared continued making himself at home and started drinking a bunch of beer. It was a bit annoying and as you can see, he just sort of threw a few back real quick and picked up this guitar. This is not just any guitar, some beater that sits around the living room and suffers the injustices of greasy hands and spilled beer at two in the morning. This is Drew's favorite acoustic guitar, worn on the neck from the grip of his delicate hands, pickguard perfectly placed when playing soft lullabies, its protected fade of five years showing in the dim of the light.

He just sort of sat there.

I write from a small coffee shop just down the street from Bar Pink, I'm probably going to be up all night as this is my fourth cup of coffee today but we are looking forward to the show tonight-forgot how cold it's gets around these parts. Nice to be back in San Diego. Not sure who is coming out tonight but hopefully we see you.

Out and About

Many thanks to those of you that came out to Origami Vinyl on Friday night. We went outside a little before 8 for a walk/talk about what songs we would play and when we returned upstairs to the loft Zach and Brad who were filming had plugged in some very soothing lights and we wound up overloadin' the circuit. After they calmly sorted out that little mishap and quickly grabbed some batteries to for their sound recorder we played our songs to an amazing crowd. Origami was a treat and we are honored that we were asked to play in the loft and that our songs are being sold at such a wonderful establishment.

We will be playing a number of shows over the next two weeks as we begin Wednesday Feb 9 at Bar Pink in San Diego.

We make the quick turnaround Thursday for a show that we have been looking forward to for quite a while at The Satellite in support of Shadow Shadow Shade (Afternoons) as they play songs from their new record which is unbelievable. We have been in love with this band since we first saw them at The Hammer a few summers ago. The Hundred Days will be on at 9, Le Switch at 10 and we will be playing the Midnight slot which has been deemed a special Happy Hour at the bar...pretty awesome to get a nice draft beer for 3 dollars. Last week was amazing and Justin Gage from Aquarium Drunkard is playing songs this week...

Nearly a minute after Jared walked into the house he just sort of wandered over to the fridge and looked for something to eat...it was a bit strange how quickly he made himself at home. Mike was particularly shocked by Jares lack of respect but in the young bears defense...it was late, he had been drinking and was very hungry.

Meet Jare Bear. He will be appearing on this here blog over the next few months each day we have a show. We were in Lake Arrowhead a few months ago and had the opportunity to hang out with him and do a photo shoot. We will be playing an early set this evening at Aviator Nation on Abbot Kinney. Wild Honey Pies

Last night we played one of the most fulfilling shows in recent memory. I suppose the inspiration to tell you about it after my terrible lack of blogging in the past month arises from wishing that everyone that has ever seen us live or heard our music or read this blog had been there last night. I don't say this because I think you would have fallen in love with our band or thought we were as good as Local Natives or anything like that, but it was the first time it felt like the worst set we could have chosen was the best set we have ever played. There were really awkward conversations with the audience about making guitar picks, some pretty bad musical mistakes, some funny conversations amongst the 5 of us on stage (we never talk to eachother on stage) and a really awkward, what seemed like 10 minute break as I tuned my guitar down a whole step to play what is by far the hardest song we have ever showed to an audience.

Over the last two years since we put everything (sans day-jobs) on hold...it seemed like shows were just a way to bring what we had figured out in a small space sitting down, sweating, all looking at one another, oftentimes not really understanding why the fuck we were doing this..,playing to our friends and the people that cared about us. We went back and forth all at different paces between drinking too much, not drinking, warming up, not warming up enough, tuning, not tuning and all the silly little nuances that will drive a band crazy as they are in their infant stages. And Not to be overly sentimental on this here lazy blog, but last night I don't think any of us were really thinking about any of that, at all. It was almost as if 2011 being here, had made us realize that when we made the decision to do this it was in 2008 and the fact that we had the opportunity to try out a bunch of crazy untested songs at cozy little Dipiazzas still playing at the club that gave us one of our first shows ever, was one of the most rewarding experiences I can remember.

We were finally told that our 10"s were done, Nick and Drew picked up 25 of the ordered 500...these 25 did not come with lables so on the way to our show in San Francisco last Thursday we decided that Drew should draw on them and customize the first run of 25. His influences varied-clocks, cats, moons, glasses, swamp creatures-they are cool. For those of you reading that are wondering what happened to your promised vinyl delivery-emails are on their way-tea time soon.

The show in San Francisco was nice-it's not very fun taking two separate cars-Milk Bar is cool-it was cold-we went to Amoeba-met the guys in We Barbarians-they are very nice-drank some local beers with The Trophy Fire-ate some noodles with friends-played our set-watched the sets-saw a cousin-drove to Berkeley and slept with friends>>>on their couches that is-nice!

We had the pleasure of heading down south to the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa and playing with our friends The Colourist at the first night of their residency. The crowd was very nice-thank you kind people in the O.C. for listening-we met some lovely Australian new friends-drank too much-I dropped my keyboard-I was walking around the club mumbling to myself because I was very upset-ate some really crazy burritos with The Colourist-I remember a lot of fog-Andrew Goldman you are a genious!

It had been nearly a year since we last played the Roxy...what used to seem like a home away from home until we returned on Wednesday to the quaint and leather soaked On The Rox-having been fearful that my electric piano was broken I decided to play the entire set on guitar-it was fun-it was strange-many thanks to Ashley Elliott and Everyday Noise for throwing the party and inviting us to play-glad we could try some things out-it helps us not go insane. Thank you all that came out to the far west. Andrew Goldman you are a super genious!!

It has been quite a while since a blog post and the truth is, I have been telling myself to sit down in front of this screen and work on just doing it, but then....as it always goes I get distracted and forget and by the morning the whole vicious cycle of non-blogging continues.

We have been up to a bit more than this blog would suggest-but what is most important is what is happening this week. It still seems to not feel real and in watching last weeks Hammer Show it is unbelievable that we are a part of what we have considered a summer tradition for the last couple of years.

If you plan on coming I would like to suggest that you show up early around 7 or so and stake out a spot in line, parking is very very crazy.

The show is completely free and we have been working very hard with the help of our closest artistic and amazing friend on a slew of new merchandise-some that is free and some that will hopefully help get us started on our newest endeavour of getting into the studio. We can't wait to be in the confines of the Hammer Courtyard in only a few days.

We will be playing at 8 PM and our good friend Norton Wisdom will be joining us on his canvas

Lots of unfamiliar people-Lakers: Nick and Mike say "sweet"...Drew and Matt say"O.K."-Drew's UMB hooded sweatshirt is keeping me warm right now on a semi-beautiful Venice night. We watched most of the game and got some vocal tracks recorded on a few new songs.

Spaceland was an amazing treat- it was quite nerve racking to finally play one of our favorite places to see bands but it was great to meet so many of you who were kind enough to show up early and give us a listen. Thank you Buzzbands, Vanaprasta and Spaceland for an amazing night-I realized today that my I.D. is still at the bar as part of a rental agreement for a pen need to head back soon.

Today has been a nice breather-I think last night was the first time we all actually slept in a bed in the last few days. I write from sunny Market street here in San Francisco after playing Milk last night. We were treated to some amazing music from all the locals and everyone treated us incredibly well. We can't wait to be back in town soon and could not be happier with the way these shows have been going...it has been an honor to be a part of this Rumble Tour and stopping where it originated was a pleasure.

We will be leaving Saturday on our Futuresounds Adventure, we can't believe it is already June and we can't believe we are doing a Rumble Tour, something we have wanted to be a part of since the day we met the fine people at Futuresounds.

We spent the later half of the day today rehearsing after fighting miserable traffic this afternoon in a location very familiar to us but somewhat far from home. It seems that everytime we go we have some of the most productive things happen in preparation to play out...we can't wait to share these new songs with cities we have been wanting to play for a long time. We start things in Seattle and we are still figuring out our wheels but we'll be there this Monday with Motopony and we can't wait.

It has been far too long yet again since I have gathered myself in front of this silly screen to think of something to post here. Sometimes I tell myself I am going to do it but then I start playing my guitar or listening to a record or driving somewhere or "looking for a job" which seems to be one of the strangest most intimidating processes in life, yet I desperately need one, I would like to go to the movies again and buy beer and avocados and pay bills and tickets, and unfortunately I don't exactly know how to save money so I am presented with a big problem.

So as I ponder my financial woes sitting in the sun with fresh coffee in a well used somewhat antique looking mug on a beautiful Thursday morning I realize that I am one of the luckiest people on the planet...this makes no sense to me. Not really sure why I am writing all this but normally when I sit down for these little sessions I have some type of plan...not this time. Today I positioned my computer on my lap (I cant really put it on a desk or it wont work as it has a really intense warp on the bottom) and just decided I would write...or type, whatever this is. Anyway here is to relevance-

Things have been going well for us in the past couple of weeks, we have been writing loads of songs, we re-decorated our space in Venice, played a fun one at the KSCR fest at USC and filmed and recorded a bunch of songs in our newly decorated space.

We have some exciting Los Angeles shows planned in the coming weeks and we hope to start working on a record here in this time that we are not out on the road. We really want people to hear these new songs and if you are around...

If you happen to live or enjoy vistiting the Westside of Los Angeles we are playing a show this evening at a lovely venue called The Stronghold (1625 Abbot Kinney Blvd. Venice, CA) we love this place and we are thrilled to be playing. We go on at around midnight BUT it's normally just a donation to get in and I believe there is some sort of free alcohol situation but don't quote me if you do decide to join us.

We will also be playing a FREE show this Saturday April 10 at The USC Springfest Festival Main Stage at 2:45 PM. There are loads of other artists playing including Sr. T-Pain himself and we are always excited to be playing outside so you feel like hanging Pre-Coachella (which I unfortunately can not attend this year and was debating disguising myself as a police officer to make my way in) this should be a mice one.

Finally the opportunity to blog blog has smoothly struck, I write from the Schwartz residence here south of Tucson on a lovely Arizona morning after nearly 14 hours in the van yesterday. Tonight: The Bunkhouse Las Vegas with Kid Theodore.

12:30 AM- Leave U.S. Border Patrol station after 5 hour stay....learn both singing and "Marco Polo" playing is prohibited while in the cells.

12:31-3:59- Mindless driving on the 10 East.

4:00- Somewhere in West Texas I tell Drew who is keeping me company in the front seat that I'll drive for another hour then he has to take over.

5:00- Switcheroo

5:01-9:00- While Drew and I are passed out in the back two rows Nick and Mike finish the drive to our hotel just outside of Austin.

9:05- I innocently scare the kind woman behind the front desk at the hotel when I stumble in looking like a crazy person....Nick and Mike eat breakfast....Drew and I close the blinds and pass out again. Never underestimate the power of a mattress.

9:30-Noon- Listen to The Bowerbirds, fall asleep very quickly, somewhere in a dream remind myself that their new record is indeed as amazing as I knew it was when I was conscious.

1:00 PM- Depart for Austin, we stopped here for gas once, but this is will be our first time setting foot downtown. The clouds proclaim their emphatically peaceful presence over the traffic that has gathered on the freeway around Exit 234.

3:00- Drew and I eat some delicious sandwiches at Stubb's BBQ...we discuss how irritably well we have eaten since we left Los Angeles...get the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw if you are ever at Stubb's (Nick told me the potato salad was better, but I'm a sucker for cabbage)

5:30ish- Watch Caitlin Rose (Nashville) play an amazing set...Motorhead was next door sound-checking very loudly but she still sounded great.

6ish- Watch Rey Fresco (Los Angeles) play an amazing set

6:30- Have the good fortune of playing our first show in Austin at Stubb's BBQ-yeahhhh!!!

8-9:30- Wander around Austin looking for shows/beer/food. This place has what seems to be an endless amounts of venues. Good Pizza. Good Chips too. "ritas".

10:30-Midnightish- Hang out at "Rusty Spurs" watch Foster The People play outside on the patio.

12:30 AM- Collectively realize we need to get some sleep-on the way back to the van run into Britt Daniel-no big deal--he gives us veteran tips on how to sneak into his show tomorrow night-now we comprehend that this time of year in Austin is fucking insane-we are thrilled for what lies ahead.

The Troubadour last night was an unbelievable treat, it had been quite a few months since the last time we were fortunate enough to be a part of a show there. We realize the time was strange and we sincerely appreciate everyone at The Troubadour helping us out and especially those of you that were kind enough to spend the early part of your Monday night with us.

This Thursday we will be departing for Austin, which we are anticipating to be one of the most awe inspiring experiences of our time together, we begin our trip with a show in Las Vegas at The Bunkhouse as part of The Neon Reverb festivities happening all weekend. We will be sharing the stage with our friends Kid Theodore who we were fortunate enough to meet last week in Long Beach and we anticipate it to be a remarkable night.

Tuning An Electric Piano

One of the greatest instruments to have ever been made is the Wurlitzer Electric Piano. Its complicated approach on amplifying the sound of a key striking a tine is unparalleled and nearly untouched. Quite possibly the most intriguing intricacy of this instrument is its innate ability to lose its tuning. Many things can cause this phenomenon...such as: hitting the keys too hard or jarring the instrument with a tough bump amongst many other things. Placing all these unique factors on an instrument can take it's toll and truly require an expert hand to salvage maintain its unscathed state. I was in a very un-unique position as the owner of one of these fine instruments when one of my keys went a bit flat a couple months ago. I at first ignored the problem and continued to play my parts as normal....as the problem persisted the note continued to get further and further out of tune. Following this I was forced to find different ways of playing many songs and this was a bummer.

Today I had the great fortunes of visiting one of the great keyboard technicians ever, he has built himself an incredible space with awesome help and is the deepest lover of vintage keyboards I have ever met. Watching my instrument get worked on was an unbelievable thrill and I wish that I had a comparable level of expertise .

Earlier today I was very concerned about being forced to play out of a computer this evening in Long Beach at one of our favorite hangouts-the one and only DiPiazza's. Instead I am thrilled to be fortunate enough to have the help of a really talented technician of sound. Thank you Mr. Rich

Also we have been working on a very interesting set for our show tomorrow evening at The Hotel Cafe. We will playing a couple songs that our very important to us that we seldom get the opportunity to play. If you are up to the challenge of staying out late...we would love to share the evening with you.

Every time we have a show on a college campus it seems to be a significantly unique experience, this last weekend in Berkeley was certainly no exception. Seeing as how we are all on an indefinite hiatus from our academic studies, it always feels incredibly refreshing to be surrounded by people and friends who are so motivated by learning....and having a great time. I've been wanting to share this journey up north with the keyboard for the entire weekend and sitting here in bed after finally taking off my "72-hour socks" I feel the best way to represent the trip is through a good old fashioned itemized hour by hour list. 3:00 PM-decide to pack the van and hit the road-debate about traffic for about an hour

Over the course of the last week we have had the pleasure of playing two amazing shows with two of the most generous and talented bands around. Saturday night was spent in Provo, Utah on a seemingly perfectly chilled evening nearly a mile above sea-level. The locals were some of the friendliest music-lovers we had ever met and Corey at Club Velour had really put together an impressive and homey room(kinda reminded us of The Smell!!!). Sunday was spent waking early....1PM at the home of Andrew from Imagine Dragons to a most magnificent breakfast/lunch. As we hit the road we were encountered by some very intense snowfall....then watched the Super Bowl at the only truck stop in Utah that served chips and salsa, sitting on the floor surrounded by enthusiastic truckers and anti-freeze boxes. We finally crawled into bed here in Los Angeles on Monday morning as the sun was rising....Utah....Surreal.

We will be heading to Provo, Utah this Saturday February 6 to play a show with our good friends Imagine Dragons. We have never had the pleasure of spending anytime in Utah and to celebrate we have put together a very unique set with a couple of new arrangements that we are thrilled to be playing.

The rain here in Los Angeles seems to never end on days like this....it reminds us of the other coast, very strange. This winter has certainly proven itself worthy.

And in case you have never spent any time in Los Angeles in mid-January, the weather is the strangest most unpredictable weirdness ever, it seems to be the one time of the year where the buildings do not look like they are floating in sepia tone, it makes it very difficult for natives to recognize pictures of the city.

It is indeed 2010, or is it twenty-ten, or wait is it maybe two-thousand and ten....in any case the "best of lists" are over, cookies, champagne, drunk uncles, down time seem like things of the past and to celebrate all things celebratory coming to an abrupt end, we will be playing a FREE 21+ show tonight (yes it is nearly 2 in the morning and I am ferociously blogging) at 3 Clubs with Aushua and Cat Party. Our friends at Futuresounds put the whole evening together and we are thrilled to be included.

As for other things Chasing Kings the folks over at Campus Circle gave us and the ever so cool Sea Wolf a nice live review in their latest publication. We had an amazing time at the show and everyone in Sea Wolf could not be any more friendly. Thank you to everyone who showed up early we really appreciated it.

We've just been looking for apartments recently, trying to get out of Malibu and into Hollywood/silverlake area. Last night we saw a great show, Foreign Born. It was great to see the type of show that reminds us why we do this. Those guys were awesome and apparently there Grizzly Bears new favorite band?? You should check them out.

Last night we explored a mountain with trees as tall as one could see. Through the limbs and pine cones was a bird. It called to us. It screamed to us. It frightened us. We still, however, continued to push forward for we were only a mere 1 1/2 miles from our final destination.

When we arrived it was an all out frenzy with tap dancers and classical pianists. The sound was heroic but the night was that of legend.

After all the dust settled and the streets were meticulously decorated with trash, the rising of the sun brought upon a new day making the preceding angelic chaos simply a fond memory.

Thanks for all who came to the show in Arrowhead last night. It was really fun.
